Yesterday the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) released a statement on CBD in food. EFSA’s scientists determined a provisional safe intake level for cannabidiol as a Novel Food of 2mg/day for a 70 kg adult. EFSA reiterated that data gaps remain, including for possible effects of CBD on the liver, and endocrine, nervous and reproductive systems, which led to an uncertainty factor of 400. The provisional safe level applies solely to food supplement formulations containing CBD with a purity of at least 98%.

EFSA will continue with the risk assessment of each CBD novel food application based on the data made available by each applicant, including the one EIHA.

What does that mean for the market? Will there be a CBD oil with a Novel Food authorisation anytime soon? Or is the daily intake a show-stopper?
